The new Long-Range Speed Cameras are being trialled in the UK and it seems that the majority of motorists are in favour of these new ‘super speed cameras’.
These new speed cameras are able to catch motorists committing motoring offences up to 1km away! And not just for speeding offences! These cameras are also able to detect if motorists are using their mobile phone behind the wheel, not wearing a seatbelt, tailgating, amongst many other offences.
According to a recent poll by the RAC, 59% of those surveyed said they wanted the police to use long-range cameras, which are capable of spotting motoring offences from two-thirds of a mile away and can catch almost 40 drivers a day, to help clamp down on illegal driving etiquette.
Only 28% were against the camera being used by all UK forces and 13% did not express an opinion. It seems that women were the most supportive of their use with 69% of women in favour vs 50% of men. Older female drivers over the age of 65 were the most supportive, with 83% of those surveyed saying they should be introduced everywhere.
The camera was used at 35 sites in November with 1,293 speeding offences detected. Ten drivers were caught travelling at 100mph or more, including one who was doing 126mph. The cameras also helped traffic officers identify five tailgating offences and seven seatbelt infringements.
